The Bottom Line
Note how the grip is longer front to back. It’s narrow, however, so the overall circumference is manageable. FN
The FN Five-SeveN qualified as one of the most interesting, and fun, pistols I’ve ever shot. The lack of recoil makes it enjoyable and easy, even if it is a bit on the loud side. For me, the “noise” added to the fun. After seeing how these light but fast bullets performed in gelatin, it’s also worthy of consideration for a defensive use gun. Large ammo capacity combined with an easy gun to shoot well goes a long way in the defensive use department. As a range plinker, the only drawback is the price of ammo. The accuracy is stunning, so picking off golf balls or charcoal briquettes down range is easy.
Like I said earlier, it’s a big little gun with plenty of attitude.
The Five-SeveN is a full-sized gun with a tiny hole in the fiery end. FN

The Five-SeveN is a single-action pistol like a 1911. Unlike a 1911, the hammer is completely contained in the frame so you don’t normally see it. FNTakedown for cleaning is surprisingly easy. You can do it with one hand. When disassembled, the barrel drops out with the recoil spring captive so it doesn’t go flying across the room. FNA Picatinny rail up front allows attachments of lights, lasers, or whatever else you might want to hang there. FNThe FN Five-SeveN comes in a large, lockable carry case. FN

Weapon Background[edit]
The FN Five-seveN is a lightweight, semi-automatic pistol designed and manufactured by Belgium firearms manufacturer Fabrique Nationale de Herstal (FN). Its name is derived from the unique 5.7 × 28mm ammunition it uses, as well as the company’s initials.
The advantages of the pistol itself include its weight (the 5.7 mm round weighs half as much as a standard 9 mm round), its recoil (FN claims the 5.7 mm round produces roughly half the felt recoil of a 9 mm round), and its 20-round magazine, which holds significantly more ammunition than other pistols. Despite its magazine capacity, the Five-seveN is a light pistol, weighing 1.6 pounds loaded. It is also reasonably compact.
A Note on Disassembly
A quick note on how each of these guns break down. Ruger claims that they have a toolless takedown method, but I found a little help from a punch went a long way when removing the pin. On the flip side, the FN does have a truly innovative and toolless take-down method. I found that it was probably the easiest gun I’ve ever broken down.
Internally, there’s a major and noticeable difference as well. Where the Ruger has a traditional guide rod and recoil spring assembly, the FN did something that was quite a bit different. The barrel of the gun is actually shrouded by the recoil spring. I found this to be a very interesting move, and maybe it’s helping the FN perform better in terms of reliability. However, I don’t think I can say one had less recoil than the other.
A Hoot to Shoot
The 20-round magazines are surprisingly light, even when full. Each cartridge is about half the weight of an average 9mm round. FN
Can I step out of “serious gun writer” character for just a minute? This pistol is a hoot! It’s loud, ridiculously accurate, and has virtually no recoil. In fact, if you do the math, recoil is about 30 percent less than that of a typical 9mm pistol. It’s just crazy fun to shoot. OK, now back to business.
It’s a single-action pistol, meaning that when you rack the slide to chamber a round, an internal hammer fully cocks. At this point, the Five-SeveN is ready to fire, which is why the safety should stay on until you are prepared to shoot. Using a trigger scale, I measured the trigger press weight right at six pounds. For a gun designed for military and law enforcement use, it has a surprisingly good trigger.
To get an idea of how the Five-SeveN would shoot, I set up targets 25 yards downrange and loaded up with American Eagle’s 40-grain full metal jacket ammo. Keep in mind that ammunition is made for practice and fun, not for match or self-defense use. Even so, the accuracy at 25 yards was stunning. I fired a bunch of five-shot groups using a Blackhawk Titan III rest and measured the diameter of each group. After my first six groups came in at 1.81, 1.66, 1.65, 1.68, 1.75, and 1.73 inches, I was convinced that the Five-Seven would hit where aimed.
Safety levers are located on both sides, just above the trigger. You can operate it with your trigger finger or with your support hand thumb on the opposite side. FN
Since the idea of the Five-SeveN is to fire a small and light bullet really fast, I also measured the average velocity of the American Eagle 40-grain ammo. I set up a Shooting Chrony Beta Master Chronograph 15 feet downrange and fired 10-shot strings so I could calculate the “real” velocity. After doing a little math, I figured the average velocity was 1,624.5 feet per second with the slowest measurement being 1,533 and the fastest 1,699 feet per second. To put that in perspective, the average 9mm will shoot somewhere between 1,050 and 1,200 feet per second.
This pistol shoots its little tiny bullets with lots of vigor and enthusiasm. Most of the ejected empty cases flew a good 25 feet forward and to my right.
The rear sights are adjustable for elevation (up-and-down) and windage (side to side). That’s a good thing because ammunition varies quite a bit regarding bullet weight, so different loads may impact in different places on your target. Lighter and heavier bullets can vary quite a bit vertically, so the adjustable sights allow you to match the point of impact to the sights for your favorite ammo. For example, right out of the box, the Five-SeveN was hitting about eight inches lower than I wanted at 25 yards when shooting the American Eagle ammo. I made a quick adjustment to the rear sight and got exactly on target.
The trigger is wide and has moderate vertical serrations for no-slip operation. It breaks right at six pounds of pressure. FN
Ammo Choices
I did most of my testing with American Eagle 5.7x28mm 40-grain TMJ Ammunition. FN
The introduction of the FN Five-SeveN to the commercial market was accompanied by a bit of irrational hysteria, as so often happens when there is a complete lack of knowledge blended with a predetermined desired outcome. To make a long story short, one of the original design goals of the 1989 NATO project was to develop Personal Defense Weapons and ammo capable of defeating soft body armor. That’s what the military does, after all. Response from the usual players was panic over the coming onslaught of blood in the streets and scores of cop killings. Of course, none of that has happened, as usual.
In a practical sense, there is nothing magic about defeating soft body armor. Nearly any Wal-Mart hunting rifle will do the same, as will virtually any AR-type rifle or pistol. It’s largely a function of ammunition and, more specifically, bullet profile and velocity.
The trigger is wide and has moderate vertical serrations for no-slip operation. It breaks right at six pounds of pressure. FN Trigger
While there is a variant of 5.7x28mm ammunition that is designed to be armor piercing, it’s available to military and law enforcement only and not available to the commercial market. That would be the “black tip” SS190 Duty Round. The ammo that is available to civilians includes the following.
Made under the FN brand, it’s actually loaded by Fiocchi USA. The bullet itself is a blue-tipped 40-grain Hornady V-Max bullet. It’s designed for sporting and competition use, and the bullet is designed to fragment at higher velocities to limit over-penetration.
A target and competition load, these cartridges feature 40-grain lead-core bullets completely covered by copper. They’re not designed to expand or fragment.
You might see some of this variant on the shelves, but it’s becoming rare. Also made under the FN brand, this all-copper bullet weighs just 27 grains.
The magazine release button is located in the traditional spot and is reversible to the opposite side for left-handed shooters. FN
In addition to these commonly available ammo types, there are some specialty loads available by special order only. Some of these include the L191 Tracer Round (military and LE only), the SB193 Subsonic Round (military and LE only), SS198LF Lead-Free Round (military and LE only), and 5.7x28mm Blank Rounds.

According to the social media (Weibo) posts of original artist Suisai (水乌龟), the idea of silver hair with one side pony tail derives from an R18 doujin comic (Not GFL related). And as one of the GFL artists that like to show some easter eggs on their works, Five-seveN also has such elements on her original skin: there is an emblem with a mocking smiling face (hua ji/滑稽脸) on her left waist, which is very popular among young Chinese net users.
For the bikini skin Cruise Queen, her gun turns into a yellow Five-seveN with banana patterns on it, which is an easter egg referring to the Monkey Business skin in CS:GO.
For the wedding dress skin Smile of Acceptance Type, the flower on her hand is the National flower of Belgium—Azalea Flower.
For April Fool’s, the original skin of Five-seveN will turn into a giant white ferret, with iconic red scarf and mocking face emblem. The artist 水乌龟 mentioned on social media that, originally it was designed for April Fool’s skin of FAL as a doll clothing, with a victory pose where she takes off the head of the ferret suit, but then decided to turn it into an easter egg for Five-seveN.
For 2018 April Fool’s easter egg, the victory pose for Five-seveN becomes a giant white ferret holding a fish. Chinese net user would use 摸鱼 (pronounce mō yú) a.k.a catching/stroking fish to represent being distracted by doing something else while working or studying. (Similar easter eggs can be found on RF Mosin-NagantMosin-Nagant, which is riding a horse.)

Reliability
The reliability is another area of separation between these two platforms. While I only ran a couple of hundred rounds of Speer Gold Dot through each gun, the FN ran flawlessly. The Ruger-57 had a handful of malfunctions, namely failures to feed.
Is this a deal-breaker? That depends on your use case for the gun and the type of ammo you plan on shooting. Ironically enough, I saw in some of the comments on the Ruger-57 review that FN-branded ammo runs best in it. Nonetheless, if you were planning on having one of these as a defensive pistol, I would nudge you toward choosing the FN due to the malfunctions I experienced with the Ruger.

Как играть с Five-SeveN
- Всегда на ближних дистанциях старайтесь максимально быстро тапать (стрелять). За счет скорострельности и точности патрона есть очень хорошая уверенность поразить врага;
- Целиться в голову — обязательный совет по всем типам оружия. Потому что голова — является самая уязвимая в игре. В нее сложнее всего попасть (из-за размеров). Но результат получается самый эффективный;
- Если получилось так, что между вами и врагом длина, то стрелять с Файв Севен необходимо по 1-2 пули. Это приведет к максимальной точности, а также к результату;
- У нашего пистолета очень сильная пробиваемость брони. Как мы указали выше — 92%. Это один из лучших показателей из всех пистолетов. Потому он является очень хорошим выбором против бронированных оппонентов. Гасить можно как в тело, так и по другим частям тела. Рекомендуем покупать в экономических раундах;
- Если стрелять по пульке и при этом сидеть, то точность полета пуль будет максимальной, которую можно достичь в игре с этим пистолетом;
- При стрельбе во время движения у многих девайсов падает точность полета пуль. В семерке этот показатель двигается в рабочем диапазоне. Потеря по точности будет прыгать в диапазоне 10-25% (у Deagle это 60-80%);
- Можно рискнуть и купить пистолет в первом раунде стороны. Да, это оставит вам без возможности приобрести броню, но даст хорошее преимущество против большого количества врагов;
- Всегда учитывайте полет пуль во время спрея. Быструю стрельбу обязательно необходимо контролировать. Сейчас мы покажем как будут лететь пули, если стрелять зажимом:
- Очень хорошим стилем игры брать Файв Севен, как запасной девайс таких снайперских винтовок: AWP или Мухи. Он очень быстро достается из кабуры, а также имеет хороший динамический стиль (скорость передвижения с ним и прочеее);
- Если получилось так, что в противовес противник взял Дигл, то у вас есть сильное преимущество за счет скорости стрельбы. Старайтесь максимально быстрее попасть ему в голову. Иначе 2 пули в телом на близком расстоянии могут испортить вам раунд;
Trigger Time
Let me start out by saying that I like both of these triggers very much, but it wasn’t a love story from the beginning with the FN. The Five-seveN trigger was one I had to take on a few dates, get to know a little better, and come to understand that we both enjoy a calzone over a slice of pie before I could say that I truly started to like it. The Ruger, on the other hand, didn’t blow me away with how great it was, but out of the box it seemed to agree with me a little more.
The Ruger grouped a little better for this writer at 25 feet, inaccuracy can be blamed on training and not necessarily the guns. (Photos: Seth Rodgers/Guns.com)
They both have some mush to power through at the top of the trigger squeeze. Neither is gritty or gross, but the mush is there. Hitting the wall is where the biggest difference lies. I talked about the effort needed to break through the wall in my standalone review of the Five-seveN. But it becomes very pronounced when it’s side by side with the Ruger-57. That effort to break the wall is then reciprocated on the reset as the trigger almost “jumps” you back to the reset. The reset is nicer on the FN because the tactile feel is better for me than the Ruger.
It took me a few trips to the range to understand the intricacies of the FN trigger. However, once I figured it out, I really started to like it. But I can understand how someone who rents the gun once at a range could say that they didn’t like it. I will say that I liked the actual feel of the FN trigger better, too. FN decided to go with a grooved steel trigger, which is very wide and provides plenty of space for the meat on the pad of any trigger finger.
The overall construction and feel of the FN trigger were superior. (Photo: Seth Rodgers/Guns.com)
I found the trigger pull on the FN to be heavier. Yet both guns shot nice and flat, especially during strings of rapid-fire. I would be happy to take either for a trip to the range any day of the week.
The Five-seven pistol was developed in conjunction with the FN P90 personal defense weapon and the 5.7×28mm cartridge. Developed as a companion pistol to the P90, the Five-seven shares many of its design features: it is a lightweight polymer-based weapon with a relatively large magazine capacity, ambidextrous controls, low recoil, and the ability to penetrate body armor when using certain cartridge types.
The Five-seven is currently in service with military and police forces in over 40 nations, including Canada, France, Greece, India, Poland, Spain, and the United States. Sales of the Five-seven were originally restricted by FN to military and law enforcement customers, but since 2004, the pistol has also been offered to civilian shooters for personal protection, target shooting, and similar uses.
Getting on Target
One of the biggest differences between these two guns are the stock sights. FN offers a set of adjustable raised sights, which I found a bit difficult to work with at times. On the other hand, Ruger offers an adjustable rear sight with a fiber-optic front post. I found I could pick up the Ruger sights on the range very quickly, and I was able to keep it on target even during rapid fire. Overall, the nod would have to go to Ruger for having far superior sights out of the box.
The bright fiber-optic front sight comes standard on the Ruger-57 and made getting on target quick and effortless. (Photo: Seth Rodgers/Guns.com)
The Ruger also comes drilled and tapped for a dot sight, which makes sense given that it is a much more recent release. While there are third-party services that will get your FN optics ready, we haven’t tried them. Either way, I’ll give a nod to the Ruger again for this inclusion.
Overall, I shot the Ruger-57 a little better, something I partially attribute to the sights. However, sights alone weren’t the only reason I shot the Ruger better, I’ll attribute the other part to …
Self-Defense Use: Penetration and Expansion
Is the Five-SeveN appropriate for self-defense or home defense?
The 5.7x28mm bullets, like “standard” AR-rifle ammunition, aren’t designed to expand like traditional hollow points. When they hit organic targets, they tend to fragment or tumble end over end, thereby creating a similar effect of making a bigger hole in the target.
Left to right: 9mm, 5.7x28mm, and .45 ACP. FN
Being curious, I decided to try out two different types of 5.7x28mm ammunition: the American Eagle full metal jacket practice load, and FN’s own SS197R Sporting Cartridge. This one uses a blue-tipped Hornady V-Max bullet. The V-Max projectiles are normally used for varmint hunting, and are designed to fragment vigorously on impact when fired from the P90 rifle. To see what each of these would do from the Five-SeveN pistol, I fired them into Clear Ballistics Gelatin blocks. Designed to simulate organic tissue, these blocks have the benefit of being transparent so you can see what happened, and more importantly, not being alive.
The blue-tip V-Max bullet penetrated both the 16-inch gel block and the six-inch gel block I used as a backstop. I had an expired Kevlar vest behind both as a secondary backstop, and the bullet came to rest there. The projectile lost its tip about three inches into the gelatin and had just started the process of opening up for fragmentation, but did not “blow up.” Fired from the P90 carbine with its longer barrel, the extra couple hundred feet per second of velocity almost certainly would have caused dramatic fragmentation. However, the bullet did start to tumble about six inches in, and you could see additional tumbling starting at 8 inches.
The FN Five-SeveN was surprisingly accurate. Every five-shot group from 25 yards measured less than two inches across. FN
The American Eagle TMJ is target ammo, and is not designed to do anything special when hitting organic targets, but I was curious so I tried it in the gelatin too. Like the V-Max, it passed through 22 inches of gelatin and was stopped by my improvised Kevlar backstop. Also like the blue-tip, it started some pretty aggressive tumbling about seven inches into the gelatin block.
When it comes to choosing equipment on which you literally might bet your life, you need to make a very personal decision that takes into account the various tradeoffs.
On the benefit side, recoil is very, very light, so this is a controllable gun. You can shoot it quickly and accurately. Magazine capacity is hard to beat at 20 rounds, plus one more in the chamber. The Five-SeveN comes with three magazines total, so that’s 61 rounds of 5.7x28mm ammo ready to go. The ammo itself is light as well, so when you look at the total package of the gun and reloads, you’re getting a lot of shots per pound of weight you have to lug around.
You can see where the FN V-Max bullet lost its tip at about three inches and started tumbling almost six inches into this Clear Ballistics gelatin block. FN
Where most folks disagree is the terminal effectiveness of the small, light, and fast 5.7x28mm projectiles. Would I want to get shot by one? Umm, no. Is each as effective, or maybe more so, than other handgun projectiles like 9mm or .45 ACP? That’s unclear, because there is limited data. When push comes to shove, all handguns do nothing more than make relatively small holes. Some do that with heavier and slower projectiles, while others like the Five-SeveN accomplish the same goal with lighter and super-fast bullets. Take your pick.
